Course Overview

The Skills Bootcamps- Gas Safe First course is a free, 16 weeks MLP course giving you the opportunity to build up specific skills in Gas. The course aims to increase awareness and encourages you to find out more about gas safety skills and the confidence to explore the potential to build a career path in the thriving gas metering industry where there are skills
shortage nationally and locally.

This programme guarantees you an interview with an employer- potentially securing a new job for those unemployed or looking to change career, secure a new role for those staying with their existing employer or to progress onto Accelerated Apprenticeships or become self-employed, within 6 months of completion.

The Skills Bootcamps- Gas Safe First programme delivers the Core for Meter Installers – Natural Gas & Domestic Meters (CMA1 & MET1). Our suite of Gas Courses are meticulously designed to meet the standards set by the Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers (IGEM). This
comprehensive programme offers an array of benefits, including the achievement of a Framework of Regulated Qualifications (RQF) in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

On successful completion of the course, you will be able to progress to sit your ACS assessment and gain the following certifications:
– Core for Meter Installation (CMA1)
– Domestic Meters (MET1)

Course Highlights

  • The domestic gas meter installer course includes training in the following areas:
  • Gas safety legislation
  • Characteristics of combustion
  • Ventilation requirements for domestic & commercial appliances
  • Installation of pipework & fittings
  • Installation, exchange, removal & commissioning of domestic gas meters
  • Tightness testing & purging
  • Checking and/or setting meter regulators
  • Identification of unsafe situations and the use of emergency notices & warning labels
  • Gas emergency actions & procedures
  • Operating emergency controls & valves
  • Flue Standards & regulations
  • Re-establishing existing gas supply & re-lighting appliances

Building Your Portfolio

Using the practical skills and new knowledge you’ve gained, you’ll need to get hands-on experience in the industry.

You’ll create a portfolio related to gas work and improve your skills while working alongside a qualified mentor. There will be frequent progress reviews to track your development and provide support.

Candidates will be supported to find a Gas Safe registered engineer or a company capable of offering the necessary work experience in gas meter installation and replacement required for the portfolio component of the program.

Job ready practical skills

To ensure a successful job outcome on completion, you will also develop job ready practical skills, CV writing/updating, job research skills, Interview Skills. Self-employment responsibilities, Employment legislation, Invoicing, Accounts, VAT, Business Sole Trader & Partnerships.

Assessment

Assessment is comprised of the following:

1. Theory test/exam

2. Practical Portfolio Building (on the job placement with a qualified Gas Engineer to collect photographic evidence of practical skills & experience)

3. Accredited Summative Assessment (ACS)

Entry Requirements

You do not need any formal qualifications to undertake this course. All applicants will be required to undergo an English & Mathematics initial assessment, regardless of prior qualifications.

All applicants will be interviewed to ensure the Skills Bootcamps- Gas Safe First programme is the right choice based on prior education & work experience.

Target Groups

The fully funded Skills Bootcamps Gas Safe First has been designed to encourage the participation of underrepresented groups which may include, but not exclusively, ethnic minority background, disability, women and veterans.

It is open to all eligible adults within the community, including those employed, not in work or self-employed, serving prisoners due to be released within 6 months of completion of a Skills Bootcamp and those on temporary release.

To be fully funded, you:

  • •Must be 19 or older on or before 31 August 2023
  • Have the right to work in the UK. This can be checked on gov.uk/view-right-to-work
  • Have permanent residence England
  • Live in England
