BTEC L3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care

Course Overview

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care is a course for students who have an interest in working in the health and social care sector. This course is equivalent to 3 A-levels and designed to enable learners to progress to a degree programme at University in a health and social care related subject.

Bursary Fund

If you meet the eligibility criteria, you may be provided with additional financial support through the Bursary Fund, which can be used to provide financial assistance with travel, course equipment and childcare costs on the days you attend college.

Assessment

This qualification is equivalent in size to 3 A-levels and is assessed through a combination of coursework and external examination.

There are 8 units which are covered over 2 year. The units covered are:

Year 1:

  • Human Lifespan Development
  • Working in Health and Social Care
  • Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs
  • Principles of Safe Practice in Health and Social Care
  • Physiological Disorders and their Care
  • Nutritional Health

Year 2:

  • Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care
  • Enquiries into Current Research in Health and Social Care
  • Work Experience in Health and Social Care
  • Promoting Public Health

Optional (3 optional units chosen from below)

  • Infection Prevention and Control 
  • Medical Physics Applications in the Health Sector 
  • Microbiology for Health Science
  • Biomedical Science
  • Genetics
  • Biochemistry for Health
  • Caring for Individuals with Dementia

Course Structure

You will develop evidence of your work practice, including  assignments, case studies, written accounts and work products.

Your evidence will be uploaded to our easy to use and accessible online e-portfolio platform, which is available 24/7 on computers, tablets and mobile devices.

Your assessor will support you throughout your qualification and observe work-based practice on at least six occasions. They will assess evidence uploaded to your e-portfolio and provide developmental feedback.

Career Opportunities and Further Study

Students primarily progress onto a to a health or social care related degree at university, a level 4/5 apprenticeships and/or into employment including:

  • Care Worker
  • Nurse
  • Midwife
  • Social Worker
  • Counselor

Entry Requirements

All applicants will be required to take an English and Mathematics initial assessment, regardless of previous qualifications. 

Please note that universities are increasingly asking for GCSEs or L2 Functional Skills as part of their entry criteria and therefore if you wish to gain admission to university, you may need to enrol on GCSE or L2 Functional Skills English and Maths course. Please note that it is the responsibility of the student to ensure their current and future qualifications comply with the entry requirements of any university to which they intend to progress.

All applicants will be interviewed to ensure that the course is the right choice based on previous educational and work experience. 

Financial eligibility

This course can be funded through the 19+ Advanced Learner Loan. You will need to check that you meet the eligibility criteria for the 19+ Advanced Learning Loan.

Alternatively, the tuition fee can be paid cash. Installment payment options are available. Please contact a course adviser to discuss payment plans.
