Course Overview

This L3 Diploma in Gas Engineering is an accredited City and Guilds qualification and is suitable for anyone, whether you’re new to the gas industry or an experienced engineer.

This course is designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge needed for a successful career as a gas engineer.

On successful completion of the course, you will gain the following certifications:

CCN1, CPA1, MET1, CENWAT, UNVENTED

This course will provide you with a licence to practice which means you can apply for Gas Safe registration and work in the UK, Guernsey and Isle of Man.

Course Highlights

Our friendly and approachable staff are experts in the field and qualified Gas Engineers who will provide guidance with work placements and support you throughout your course.

This course is delivered as a blended learning program. You will attend the centre two day per week, where learning will take place in the classroom and workshop.

You’ll also have access to our easy to use and accessible online learning platform where you will have 24/7 access to lesson recordings, learning materials, and your e-portfolio consisting of practical activities carried out in the workshop and workplace.

Assessment

The course will cover basic and complex gas systems which includes the routine maintenance, reactive maintenance and commissioning and de-commissioning of gas appliances in a variety of working environments.

This course provides the skills and underpinning knowledge for both basic and advanced gas systems and includes an end-test at the end of the qualification which includes both a knowledge and practical skills test.

The course covers the following units:

  • Understanding health and safety in gas utilisation
  • Understanding scientific principles in gas utilisation
  • Understanding combustion and properties of gas
  • Understanding buildings, services and structures
  • Gas safety principles
  • Specific core installation and maintenance
  • Tightness test, purge, commission, and de-commission gas pipework up to 35mm (1¼ diameter) in small gas installations
  • Install, commission and de-commission gas pipework up to 35 mm (1¼) diameter in domestic and small commercial premises
  • Install domestic gas water heating and wet central heating appliances
  • Maintain domestic gas appliances water heating and wet central heating appliances
  • The installation, commissioning and safety aspects of hot water systems for domestic use in accordance with UK building regulations

On successful completion of the course you can become self-employed and apply for Gas Safe Registration, or you can work for an existing company with Gas Safe Registration.

Entry Requirements

All applicants will be required to take an English and Mathematics initial assessment, regardless of previous qualifications. 

All applicants will be interviewed to ensure that the course is the right choice based on previous educational and work experience. 

Financial eligibility

If you’re 19 or over, you can apply for a loan to cover the full cost of this course (Level 3 Diploma).

You won’t have to pay it back until you’re earning over £26,575 a year.

The National Skills Fund level 3 adult offer (also known as the free courses for jobs offer) is available to support adults aged 24 and above without an existing full level 3 or equivalent qualification.
