Overview
This taster class will teach you all the basic principles you need to know to begin sewing and dress making.
This course covers the following topics:
• Machine parts, tools and functions
• Various machine stitch settings including: straight stitch, zig zag stitch, back stitch, decorative stitches
• Various needles and threads including: jersey needles, leather needles, polyester and cotton threads
• Bobbin winding
• Threading the machine
• Adjusting stitch tension
• Basic stitches: Open Seam, Closes Seam, Top Stitching, Curves and Corners
• How to finish raw edges with sewing machine and over locker
You’ll use all the skills you’ve learnt to make your very own Tote bag. All materials are provided, but if you have a fabric of your own that you would like to use, feel free to bring it along.
Tuition is usually delivered in small groups or can be one-to-one and tutors are able to support you with your individual learning requirements.
Suitability
This course is aimed at absolute beginners who may or may not have previously used a sewing machine and would like to develop the confidence to start sewing / dressmaking.
Tutor Description
Chika Iwenofu is an award winning Fashion & Textile Designer who graduated from Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design, where she received her BA (Hons) in Textile Design. Previously a designer at a prestigious weaving mill in the UK, Chika has produced fabric collections catering to the luxury fashion and interior markets, and has developed a wealth of knowledge on computer aided design (CAD) and the fashion and textile industry.

Courses take place in our Fashion and Textiles Studio equipped with exceptional design facilities.

Cost: 1st Taster Session- FREE (2.5 hours)
Following sessions- £10 per hour (1 hour minimum)
