Course Overview

This qualification will allow you to to learn, develop and demonstrate the skills required for employment in the Early Years sector. You must be working in a relevant childcare setting in order to demonstrate your competence working with babies, toddlers and young children. The course will cover all stages of child development, from conception to 7 years.

Bursary Fund

If you meet the eligibility criteria, you may be provided with additional financial support through the Bursary Fund, which can be used to provide financial assistance with travel, course equipment and childcare costs on the days you attend college.

Assessment

This diploma is 64 credits and will be assessed through your  coursework and direct observation at your workplace. The course covers the following units: 

  • Developing effective study skills
  • Principles of safeguarding policies and procedures
  • Theories which underpin practice
  • Child development from conception to 7 years
  • Observation and assessment in the early years sector
  • Promote partnership working with parents
  • Model, promote and support positive behaviour with children
  • Promoting diversity, equality and inclusion
  • Promoting children’s health and welfare
  • Promote children’s speech, language and communication development
  • Working in partnership with colleagues and other professionals
  • Continuous professional development using reflective practice
  • Support organisation requirements for recording, storing and disclosing information and providing reports
  • Plan and implement activities, play opportunities and educational programmes
  • Supporting children’s creative and imaginative pay and experiences
  • Supporting children experiencing transitions and significant events
  • Promoting the health and safety of children

Course Structure

You will develop evidence of your work practice, including  assignments, case studies, written accounts and work products.

Your evidence will be uploaded to our easy to use and accessible online e-portfolio platform, which is available 24/7 on computers, tablets and mobile devices.

Your assessor will support you throughout your qualification and observe work-based practice on at least six occasions. They will assess evidence uploaded to your e-portfolio and provide developmental feedback.

Entry Requirements

All applicants will be required to take an English and Mathematics initial assessment, regardless of previous qualifications. 

Please note that universities are increasingly asking for GCSEs or L2 Functional Skills as part of their entry criteria and therefore if you wish to gain admission to university, you may need to enrol on GCSE or L2 Functional Skills English and Maths course. Please note that it is the responsibility of the student to ensure their current and future qualifications comply with the entry requirements of any university to which they intend to progress.

All applicants will be interviewed to ensure that the course is the right choice based on previous educational and work experience. 

Financial eligibility

This course can be funded through the 19+ Advanced Learner Loan. You will need to check that you meet the eligibility criteria for the 19+ Advanced Learning Loan.
