Course Overview
The Specialist Support for Teaching & Learning in Schools level 3 diploma course is suitable for those who are in the role of a teaching assistant who directly support teaching and learning of pupils that may require specialist knowledge and skills.
The qualification is designed for those learners already working or volunteering in a learning support role (Teaching Assistant, Classroom Assistant or Learning Support Assistant) who want to develop their knowledge and skills or confirm vocational proficiency. There is a requirement for assessment in a real work environment such as within primary, secondary or special schools, so learners must have a placement (either as a volunteer or as a member of staff) in a school environment.

Assessment
Assessment will be undertaken via a combination of assignment work and practical work based observation.
Students will develop the knowledge and skills required to provide specialist support to teachers and pupils, including:
- Supporting children with special education needs.
- Supporting children’s speech, language and communication.
- Supporting disabled children.
- Supporting learners with behavioural emotional and social development needs.
Course Structure
You will develop evidence of your work practice, including assignments, case studies and written accounts.
Your evidence will be uploaded to our easy to use and accessible online e-portfolio platform, which is available 24/7 on computers, tablets and mobile devices.
Your assessor will support you throughout your qualification and observe work-based practice. They will assess evidence uploaded to your e-portfolio and provide developmental feedback.
Career Opportunities & Further Study
After successfully completing your qualification you could apply for a teaching assistant position within a nursery, infant or junior school, special school, secondary school or independent school.
Progression routes could include:
- Senior Teaching Assistant
- Senior Special Educational Needs Assistant
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) by following a programme of Initial Teacher Training (ITT)
Entry Requirements
All applicants will be required to take an English and Mathematics initial assessment, regardless of previous qualifications.
Please note that universities are increasingly asking for GCSEs or L2 Functional Skills as part of their entry criteria and therefore if you wish to gain admission to university, you may need to enrol on GCSE or L2 Functional Skills English and Maths course. Please note that it is the responsibility of the student to ensure their current and future qualifications comply with the entry requirements of any university to which they intend to progress.
All applicants will be interviewed to ensure that the course is the right choice based on previous educational and work experience.
Financial eligibility
This course can be funded through the 19+ Advanced Learner Loan. You will need to check that you meet the eligibility criteria for the 19+ Advanced Learning Loan.
